PE and Athletics

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit… You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

Our Philosophy on Fitness

In the pursuit of educational excellence and in our accordance with our Mission Statement, we believe that developing the heart of a lion by becoming physically fit, is one of the pillars of SMLCA. Because of the value that God places on body discipline and team principles, PE and Athletics will play an important role at SMLCA. We believe that every student will benefit from a daily regimen of exercise and sport. Plans are underway to work closely with the YMCA Westlake for use of facilities, staff and programs. Dr. Kenneth Cooper, the foremost expert in the fitness and wellness industry, says it best, “In a country where more than 10 million children ages 6 to 17 are considered overweight and almost half of these are severely obese, it's more important than ever to educate young people about the importance of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.”

Our vision is that the last period of the academic day will be a combined PE/Athletic period for all students. The PE component would focus on a combination of age appropriate fitness activities and fun, team oriented games. In addition, we hope to take advantage of the opportunities unique to our area and introduce students to activities such as wakeboarding, kayaking, sailing, fishing, hunting safety, equestrian activities, cycling and even triathlon training. The athletic component calls for all students to be exposed to the full spectrum of offered sports. Our desire is to offer the following team sports:

Boys:
Fall: Football, Soccer
Winter: Basketball, Wrestling
Spring: Baseball, Tennis

Girls:
Fall: Volleyball, Soccer
Winter: Basketball
Spring: Softball, Tennis

We acknowledge the potential challenges for a new school attempting to field competitive teams.  Interscholastic games will be scheduled whenever appropriate. Some team competitions may be set up on an intramural basis.

Our Philosophy on Athletics

While physical fitness will be an important component of our quest for excellence, we believe that team sports provide one of the most effective methods possible to learn and incorporate biblical principles. The whole concept of team implies sacrifice, giving to others in a way that the sum of team is greater than the sum of its individual players. Discipline, hard work, leadership, delayed gratification, dedication, commitment, loyalty, perseverance, encouragement, serving, character, integrity and building precept upon precept are just some of the biblical principles to be gleaned from team sports. We believe that these are learned traits and not exclusive to the more gifted or talented player. As has been seen over and over in recent times, team sports do not necessarily breed these qualities. It requires an intentional effort by all; administration, coaches and student athletes.

Although we believe that at the middle school level, every effort should be made to provide playing time for all, we philosophically believe that game playing time should be determined more by effort and attitude than solely by ability and certainly not by simply having a name on a roster. SMLCA teams should be characterized as innovative yet fundamentally sound.
Once again, we go to God’s Word for the standard on athletics…if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules. (2 Tim 2:5)  SMLCA student athletes (and coaches!) will learn to play and compete with respect; respect for their school, their families, their coach, their teammates, their opponents and their referees. Rolling their eyes, much less a glare or questioning of any call whatsoever will never be tolerated.
