12.11.07 The most haunting song ever...
12.11.07...  While our kids were growing up...
I used to carry a copy of the lyrics to 'Cats in the Cradle' by Harry Chapin in my pocket. I just recently retired it as it was worn to a frazzle. It is the most haunting song ever written. I still cower when I hear the words. Chapin says the lyrics scare even him!

For those not familiar with it, you can click on the link       http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlHdjjHNEC8

Over the weekend, that song came to mind. Why? From a tale of two quarterbacks... one who won the Heisman Trophy and one who went to jail. One has the countenance of Jesus and the Joy of the Lord and the other... does not. One has a dad sold out for the Lord; one took his mother's maiden name in response to an absent dad.

Over the years, I found myself praying quite a bit, "Oh Lord, please don't let me have to pray for my kids to not grow up like me". Without the Lord's grace, I would have prayed that prayer many more times than I have.

I spoke recently with a prospective board member. As we talked about the mission of Christian education... helping to develop young men and women to be the person that God Almighty, Creator of the entire universe, wants them to be, we were overwhelmed at what a humbling thought that was.

"Lord, may all parents, prospective volunteers, staff and faculty of SMLCA never be haunted but rather be encouraged by the words 'my son was just like me'." Amen.
